1.1. Aims of the course

This subject aims at the specific education of the student in the critical knowledge of Spanish literature of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries with the support of literary works of great relevance. Therefore, the general objectives of the subject are: 1) to offer the student a detailed view of the great Western cultural movements of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and a diachronic study of the main authors and works of Spanish literature in that context. 2) to awaken interest in literature itself as an artistic creation and in its relationship with other artistic forms. 3) to know the philological tools and the new technologies applied to the discipline.

1.2. Context and importance of this course in the degree

"Modern and Contemporary Spanish Literature (I)" is part of the group of specific obligatory subjects related to the subject of Spanish Literature within the Degree in Hispanic Philology, third year. Specifically, the History of Spanish Literature deal with the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

1.3. Recommendations to take this course

Students who take the course "Modern and Contemporary Spanish Literature (I)" must have a correct oral and written command of the Spanish Language, specific prior knowledge of History of Spain and the History of Spanish Literature of the centuries XVIII and XIX, having read Spanish literature of this period and having been trained in techniques of analysis and commentary of literary texts.

2.1. Competences

Students that pass the subject will be more competent in all those skills related to the study of the literary production of certain centuries (XVIII and XIX) from the methodology and work techniques developed during the course. Among them, the ability to interpret and assess the main trends of modern and contemporary Spanish literature of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; the ability to critically evaluate the style and content literary text of the time and the ability to critically manage and evaluate the consulted bibliography and to frame it in a theoretical perspective.

2.2. Learning goals

To pass this subject the student must demonstrate the following as the most important results: a historical and critical knowledge of the main currents and trends in Spanish literature of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in its historical and social evolution and its interrelation with other disciplines; the mastery of the bibliographical sources necessary for the study of the literature of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and the identification of problems and topics of philological interest in the field of Spanish literature of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

2.3. Importance of learning goals

The student will be able to locate the main works of Spanish Literature of these two centuries in a correct historical and artistic context. He will also be able to analyze the style of the literary works of the period and his dialogue with other disciplines.

3.1. Assessment tasks (description of tasks, marking system and assessment criteria)

First call

Final exam:

- Essay-type question (50%) and short answer questions (20%).

- Individual work (20%).

- At all times the accuracy, clarity and correction in oral and written language as well as participation in class (10%) will be assessed.

II Second Call

Final exam (The criteria are identical to those required for the first call).

4.1. Methodological overview

The methodology followed in this course is oriented towards the achievement of the learning objectives. It is based on diverse activities oriented to the development of critical thinking. A wide range of teaching and learning tasks are implemented, such as lectures, practice sessions, readings, autonomous work and assessment tasks.

Students are expected to participate actively in the class throughout the semester.

Classroom materials will be available via Moodle. These include the course syllabus and  other course-specific learning materials.

4.2. Learning tasks

This is a 6 ECTS course organized as follows:

  • Lectures (2 ECTS: 20 hours).
  • Practice sessions (2 ECTS: 20 hours). Students are expected to use ICTs for their assignments and create documents individually and collaboratively.
  • Autonomous work (1.5 ECTS: 15 hours).
  • Assessment tasks (0.5 ECTS: 5 hours). A set of written and oral assignments and exams.
  • Tutorials  (office hours).

  1. The Journalism in the 18th century.
  2. The Theater in the 18th century. Leandro Fernández de Moratín and La comedia nueva.
  3. The Poetry evolution.
  4. The Prose and the Novel. The main Authors. Cadalso’s  Cartas marruecas.
  5. Romanticism. The romantic journalism. Mariano José de Larra.
  6. The Romantic Poetry. Espronceda and others.  
  7. The Romantic Theater.  
  8. The Realism (Benito Pérez Galdós, Clarín, Emilia Pardo Bazán).  
  9. Bécquer and The Rimas.
